lg g watch The LG G Google Wear Watch 3 Days In: The Real Deal. LG G Watch

So, I decided sometime a few weeks ago that the Pebble smartwatch that I had strapped to my wrist for at least a month was the training wheels to the newly announced LG G watch and bit the bullet. I sold the Pebble on eBay (and a few other items) to procure a preorder of the LG G watch on the Google Play store. Now, normally, I have taught myself to wait–wait until the next version. This time, I thought that since I’m an Android-centric Google Now user, this G watch was finally what I was waiting for after the Pebble. Well, three days into the G watch experience, let me share my unabashed thoughts with you on this smartwatch.

First, the thing that I most like about the G watch is the build quality–and size. The very moment I took it out of the box, I was thinking, “Wow. This thing could knock an average-sized man out cold.” It feels heavy, big and built well, unlike the plastic-feeling tiny Pebble, and I immediately thought that there is nothing under this model as far as build quality and size. Apple’s entry into the smartwatch market simply has to be the same, or, they will immediately get points deducted. I almost can liken the build quality of the G watch to the build of the iPhone 5–Apple has the metal & heavy feel down cold–Samsung still seems to be trapped in the plastic vortex. The only sore thumb–maybe–is the watch strap. It’s a very plastic-feeling band, which seems slightly out of place on this watch. I say maybe, simply because upon closer inspection the material seems a bit more exotic than plastic–it’s a rubber-feeling material that does repel any marks, simply by polishing it. All I can think of is the Batman suit–this is most possibly built out of the same material. All jokes aside, let’s move on.

Buttons? Nope. There are none. When you first take it out of the box and start searching for the on button, such as on the Pebble, it’s not there. This watch has zero buttons, and, I love LG for making that decision. In my past life as an Apple Mac Genius, I know first hand the problems with physical buttons on devices. They are a holdover from a past life and I’m so happy that LG finally killed the button–just like Apple killed the floppy drive and later, the hard drive. Analog technology that is not needed anymore–bravo, LG. So, the question remains–how do you turn this watch on? Just place it in the charging cradle and it comes to life, such as a toy in Tony Stark’s lab. As a side note, I use a particular piece of software on my Android phone called “Gravity Screen,” which helps kill those analog buttons once and for all–it allows you to simply pick up your phone and it’s ready for use–no pressing power buttons to wake up the device or anything–put the phone back down and it goes to sleep. Simple and it’s the way I expect a device to work–why do I have to hit buttons? We have touch screens and accelerometers now which can figure out when to power up and power down. LG gets this point and I applaud them.

When powered up, the watch connects pretty flawlessly to your Android phone with the Android Wear software from the app store. As far as and iPhone, you’re out of luck–wait a few months and you’ll have your version of a smart watch that we can all fight about. The watch does a free update to get you current and you are finally at the main screen, which is exactly like Google Now on any Android phone. You get your weather and notification cards from gMail and Hangouts, as well as other nicely-designed cards sent from your phone. Of course, leave the range of your phone and you’re pretty much looking at a dumb watch–still no wifi, similarly to the Pebble. In this day and age (Apple, I’m talking directly to you), there is simply NO reason why these watches cannot have independent wifi capability. The fact that I *still* have to have my phone within bluetooth range is a bummer. These watches should be able to function wirelessly if needed, and use Bluetooth when in proximity. Someone (Apple?) is going to come around and solve this problem and finally make the smart watch independent from our cellular phones when needed. A neat feature of the LG G watch is how it decides to go to sleep and stay awake. Unlike the Pebble, you can’t simply shake the watch violently to get it to wake up like the Pebble–on the G watch, you simply (gently) turn the watch to you and it wakes up. When it’s “awake,” it is now listening to you for voice commands–yes, Google Now is listening. Creepy, but, very Michael Knight. The notifications that come to your wrist are worth the price of the device (north of $200), such as Facebook notices, text messages, weather alerts, and whatever else you can imagine. Add free IFTTT integration and you have a powerhouse device–right on your wrist.

To rate the voice command tricks the G watch has, let’s say 10 is HAL from 2001 and 1 is unrecognizable. I’d have to rate this watch about 7.5. The fact that it recognizes your voice at all is a game-changer, however, it’s definitely a version 1 product–much like the original iPhone felt. It struggled a few times today with things like “Phila Street,” among other strange words that simply aren’t in the dictionary. For the most part, it nailed my commands a good 85-90% of the time, with minor help here and there via my fingers. Saying things like “Wake me up at 9am” work completely flawless–they work each time without question. Reminders are also pretty great, such as one I used tonight to avoid a parking ticket: “Remind me to move the car in 2 hours.” It built in a 10 minute buffer. Sending text (“Send a text to my wife that I’ll be there in about 5 minutes”) and email are pretty good via voice–however–you can’t stop it from sending before approving. For example, a few times it messed up a few individual words and decided to just go ahead and send the message anyway–at least the phone asks you if it looks good before sending. As Google ramps up Google Now, the voice capability will be phenomenal in a few years–the commands it can recognize as I bark them out while driving are worth the price of admission–however, let me proof it first!

Battery life? Ehh. If you’re looking for Pebble-like battery life, put down the G watch and step away from it–you’re not getting it. For example, I had my watch on the charger at 3PM, and it was fully charged at about 4PM. It’s now 11:30 and it’s down to 54%. Now, that’s a lot of tinkering around with it, but, it’s also the fact that watch is on most of the time. Unlike the Pebble, it has a full-color screen that goes black and white when you turn the watch away from your view. However, the watch is still on, listening for data–it has to sap that small batter in there.  You will be charging it in the special magnetic USB charger and brick LG gives you, which is strangely powerful. It’s almost as if a tractor beam grabs the watch from 2 inches away and sucks it in magically–great for dark environments, or, when you’ve had too much wine and can’t see straight. I would hope for the future ‘battery enhancement’ updates for this watch that adds some juice to the clock. The battery life may be a sticking issue for anyone getting into the smart watch market–there’s simply little room inside of there for a battery. Why aren’t we supplementing solar charging with these devices yet? Don’t ask me–I’m not an engineer.

What’s the ‘cool factor’ of wearing one of these Pebble-killing smart watches? I would say pretty high. Tonight was the first real night I wore the watch in public and I was asked at least 3 times in 3 hours what the Hell was on my wrist. Now, granted, I got that a few times a day during an 8-hour shift at the Genius Bar while wearing my Pebble, but, people notice a bright color screen a lot faster. The mere fact that I can talk to my watch makes me get warm inside. The possibilities are almost endless (“OK Google, dim the lights in my office…”). The fact that I have to say “OK Google” before every voice command is enough to justify anyone punching me right in the face for it. I feel like punching myself in the face while saying it myself, as a matter of fact. I’d love to be able to change the default command from “OK Google” to something way cooler like “Jarvis?” or “KITT?” I’m hopefully confident Apple may get that part right. Just having a full-color touch screen on your wrist is just damn cool–you’ll see the future possibilities of apps that can take advantage of this real estate.

As I said earlier, the LG G watch is the iPhone 1 of smart watches as you read this. I’m not going to count the Pebble as the iPhone 1 whatsoever–I would liken the Pebble to the weird phones that were out before the iPhone hit the scene. The Google Wear smart watches that are here on the scene are clearly and perfectly the first iPhone–cool and new–however, they are missing something that you can’t put your finger on. They are missing all the cool enhancements and upgrades that came with every iPhone after the original. Here’s some thoughts on what they could have to make them just a tiny bit more bearable:

  • Shower mode. When you take an LG G watch into the shower, it FREAKS out. It’s because the touch screen thinks you are touching it, which you aren’t. The water drops are freaking the screen out. Give me a special mode that KNOWS when I’m in the shower and shut the damn screen off. Apple, you’re going to have the same exact problem–touch screens DO NOT like water. Solve it now and patent it.
  • WiFi. Seriously? I *still* have to have my phone in my pocket for the watch to work? Give me WiFi or give me death.
  • Better Screen. Don’t bother using the G watch in the sunlight. You’ll lose.
  • Shake it. I like the “turn to your face” to turn the watch on, but, I love to be able to shake it like the Pebble to wake it up.
  • Battery. Let’s go solar or nuclear for extra juice.
  • Let me decide. Don’t send messages via voice before I can check them.
  • Where’s the health sensors? I bet Apple destroys on this front.

Some final quick thoughts that I love about this new entry into a soon-to-be-important market:

  • Thank you for letting me change the watchfaces easily
  • Thank you for keeping the platform open for apps like PayPal, Evernote, new watchfaces, etc.
  • Thank you for NO bloatware, Google. Bravo!
  • Thank you for NO buttons. Good riddance.
  • Saying “Wake me up at 6am” and then the watch vibrating at 6am is amazing. No phone needed.

All in all, looking back, I’d say wait. Wait for either Apple’s entry into the market, or, wait for the version 2 of this device. I already feel exactly like I did when I first got the Pebble watch–I was kind of mediocre-feeling about it. A year later, I was inseparable from my Pebble, and I think I’ll get there after a few software updates and enhancements on the G watch–or something better is going to come along. It’s a good first start, but again, it’s only first start at the end of the day.
